February 22, 2011 is a day etched in the minds of most New Zealanders. It was the day of the second major Christchurch earthquake.
As you’ll read, our Christchurch office was in the centre of what’s now the city’s red zone. Thankfully, all our people escaped unharmed. Just over six months later, the Christchurch team is operating as ‘business-as-usual’, though from considerably different office premises and still facing ongoing shakes. Kia kaha to all of you in Christchurch.
Prior to September 2010, earthquakes and Christchurch weren’t closely associated, which, along with the ‘unknown’ element of Mother Nature, can make disaster preparedness a challenge. However, there are things we do know about and can prepare for. This issue, we look at a couple of upcoming events where planning and preparedness are helping to smooth the way.

2010 was a year of challenges for many businesses. At Traffic Design Group, we focused on meeting those challenges by expanding the reach of our business and through initiatives that effectively help us work smarter.

There’d be little argument that working smarter is a worthy pursuit, particularly in economic conditions where every dollar counts.

“Every new beginning comes from some other beginning’s end”, according to Roman Stoic statesman Seneca. Here at TDG we are already stronger and better equipped than we were in 2009, and we are looking forward to the opportunities 2010 will present.

This quote from time management author Alan Lakein reflects the theme of our winter issue of Journeys. Transportation planning is a significant part of our business. Critically, it’s about enabling transport activity where it realises its greatest value. As you’ll read, it’s an area where we bring to bear a lot of technology.

We hope you’ve enjoyed the festive season and the chance to relax and recharge your batteries in preparation for what promises to be a challenging year ahead. Here at Traffic Design Group (TDG) we’re embracing the ‘new’ in New Year, launching both our new logo and Journeys, our new bi-annual client newsletter. Through Journeys we’ll keep you up to date with the latest in transportation and traffic engineering issues and with TDG developments.
